A drummer-turned-composer, Steve Reich has produced some of the most vibrant, original and interesting music of our time. In Phase to Face we follow Steve as he travels from Autumn in Normandy Festival to Rome, to Tokyo, to New York and to Manchester for the world premiere of 2 X 5.

Broadcaster John Kelly has developed a cult following since 1997 when he began presenting the groundbreaking Electric Ballroom on Radio Ireland.
RTÉ lured him across town to present the Mystery Train, where he won the PPI Award for Music Broadcaster of the Year. With the train in a siding, he now presents the JK Ensemble on RTÉ Lyric FM, Radio Clash on RTE 2XM and The View on RTÉ Television. This is John’s second interview with Steve Reich.

Cork Opera House is proud to present The Reich Effect, a 5-day marathon festival marking the 75th year of the Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Steve Reich. A multitude of performances including the Irish premiere of WTC 9/11 by the Kronos Quartet and performances by London Sinfonietta and Synergy Vocals, The Johann Johannsson Ensemble and an electric line-up of Irish musical talent including Crash Ensemble, Íarla Ó Lionáird and Gavin Friday. The Reich Effect will take place in Cork Opera House and other Cork City venues from Wednesday 27 through Sunday 31 July.
The New York Times calls Steve Reich "our greatest living composer” and “among the great composers of the century", while The New Yorker hails him as “the most original musical thinker of our time”. From his early taped speech pieces to his digital video opera, the American’s path has embraced not only aspects of Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz.
The Reich Effect will begin with a screening of the film Steve Reich - Phase to Face followed by a public interview with Reich conducted by John Kelly on 27 July in Cork Opera House. Other highlights include the Kronos Quartet (28 July, Cork Opera House), RTÉ Concert Orchestra performing works by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Kjartan Sveinsson (Sigur Ros) (29 July, City Hall), London Sinfonietta (30 July, Cork Opera House), Efterklang with Daniel Bjarnason and the Messing Orchestra (30 July, Savoy Theatre), Johann Johannsson (31 July, Triskel Christchurch) and Crash Ensemble with Iarla Ó Lionáird and Gavin Friday (31 July, Cork Opera House).
Crash Ensemble will perform Double Sextet for which Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2009.
Local, national and international artists will come together to produce three special programmes of Reich’s music: Counterpoint, Drumming and Phases. These will include two unique dance commissions. David Bolger will dance to Kate Ellis’s Cello Counterpoint and Nic Gaireiss will dance Clapping Music. Both events take place in the Firkin Crane.
The Reich Effect is curated by Mary Hickson, Cork Opera House Chief Executive Officer, and the prize-winning cellist, chamber musician, and musician-in-residence in Cork Opera House, Kate Ellis.

I have always been hugely ‘effected’ by Reich myself since my time studying Music at UCC and it is a real privilege to invite him to Cork. Kate Ellis and I had great fun and deliberation selecting the programme for the festival and we look forward to your reaction and enjoyment over the few days in Cork!”

The opening concert of The Reich Effect brings together some of Ireland’s most talented musicians to perform Reich’s four counterpoint pieces. Each piece is a work for solo instrument and tape, the tape part consisting of many pre-recorded instrumental layers. The series of pieces reflects Reich’s interest in the mediation between tape and live performance, and these innovative and forward thinking compositions have profoundly influenced many modern musical artists.
Together with CoisCeim Dance Theatre the Reich Effect presents a specially commissioned dance piece choreographed by David Bolger and performed by Emma O’Kane and Olwen Grindley to accompany Kate’s performance of Cello Counterpoint.

The Irish Times has described Kaleidoscope as a ‘life saving, spirit-lifting, pioneering cultural vultures… the sort of thing our Cultural Ambassador should be shouting about’. Curated by cellist Kate Ellis and violinist Cliodhna Ryan, Kaleidoscope will bring an intimate musical experience to The Reich Effect with a programme of music focusing on composers, musical languages and cultural influences that have inspired the work of Steve Reich. Kate and Cliodhna will be joined by a selection of festival performers and Cork natives including Owen Gunnell (O Duo), Malachy Robinson (Crash Ensemble) and sisters Linda and Irene Buckley.
Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland’s Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme.
The Reich Festival gratefully acknowledges the loan by the CIT Cork School of Music of one of its Michael Johnson harpsichords.

There are many musical genres evident in the compositional work of Steve Reich. This programme celebrated the direct influence a trip to Africa in 1971 had on Reich’s compositional style. Shortly after this experience he composed Drumming, which marked the beginning of a new stage in his career. UK based percussion group O Duo are joined by two of Ireland’s rising stars, Catriona Frost and Alex Petcu Colan, London Sinfonietta’s David Hockings and Tim Gunnell to bring us this exciting programme. The Reich Effect is delighted to welcome Michigan born dancer Nic Gareiss to the stage with a specially commissioned dance piece to accompany Six Marimbas.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra explore The Reich Effect at work through the music of composers Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Ros and Nico Muhly, one of the must talked about composers/musicians of our generation. Greenwood’s Doghouse was commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra and features music used in his Norwegian Wood film score. Reich’s Eight Lines is influenced by the composer’s studies of Hebrew Scriptures. Sveinsson’s Credo has been called luminous, intense and is verging on the mystical. The Voice Effect, a new choir created for The Reich Effect under the direction of John O’Brien, will make its debut as part of this programme.

Phases sprang from Steve Reich’s 1965 experiment with recorded tapes of a Pentecostal preacher’s voice. This led him to translate an “out of phase” effect into a series of pioneering instrumental compositions that use a repeating pattern with interlacing segments moving from background to foreground, and shifting in place as new elements are added. Lean and logical, these works are marked by an indefinable mixture of beauty and sadness.
“It’s rare that a composer garners so much acclaim while living - the greatest thing about Reich’s career is that he has had an opportunity not only to submit ideas into the ether, but also to rebut, critique and addend those ideas in a very conspicuous way. One of the world’s most influential contemporary music ensembles, London Sinfonietta, perform Reich’s seminal Music for 18 Musicians. They are known for the virtuosity of their performances and for placing new music at the heart of contemporary culture. The name Efterklang comes from the Danish word for “remembrance” or “reverberation.” Formed in Copenhagen, its four core members are Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer, Thomas Husmer, and Rasmus Stolberg. Efterklang + Daniel Bjarnason & Their Messing Orchestra is a special 17 piece band that debuted at the Cross Linx festival tour in February earlier this year. It is Efterklang with Daniel James (of Canon Blue) on guitar, Heather Broderick on piano and Peter Broderick on vibes and steel drum.
They will be joined by the brilliant Icelandic composer Daniel Bjarnason on Rhodes. If that’s not enough add a saxophone quartet, a brass quartet and a classic percussionist – this brings the ensemble up to Efterklang + Daniel Bjarnason & Their Messing Orchestra. This will be the last concert for Efterklang for some time as they will shortly commence work on a new album.

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic musician, composer and producer. His stately, slow-building and hauntingly melodic music has been quietly bewitching listeners for years blending acoustic and electronic, old-style and high-tech, organic and synthetic sounds into a romantically rhapsodic musical experience.
Iskra String Quartet have toured extensively across Europe with award winning Icelandic film/classical composer Johann Johannsson. Other notable performances/recordings include work for artists such as Vampire Weekend, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens and Duke Special.
"I first heard Steve Reich in my late teens listening to a library copy of Music for 18 Musicians. A bit later I was introduced to his earlier work, the phase pieces. I was fascinated by his use of found recordings and the idea of music as process. I think the way pieces like ‘Come Out’ and ‘Different Trains’ use found sound was influential on how I approached composing a piece like IBM 1401, a User’s Manual for example. ‘Four Organs’ partly inspired me to form my own organ quartet, Apparat Organ Quartet, whose original aim - before we started writing our own music - was to play those early minimalist electric organ pieces by Reich, Glass, Terry Reilly etc." - Jóhann Jóhannsson

Cork Opera House has invited submissions from budding electronic artists for the experimental Reich DRUMMING Remix Competition which is presented in association with Cantaloupe Music, So Percussion and Lawson White Productions. The finalists will be judged and selected by none other than Steve Reich, having been shortlisted by a panel of high profile judges including Jim Carroll, Gavin Friday, Stevie G, Nialler9 and Dónal Dineen. Steve Reich’s shortlist will be given an opportunity to perform at the Remix Club.
